Course

Defusion and Deescalation

Course Overview

Who’s it for?

This course is suitable for those working with adults, children and young people across the range of care and support environments.

Participants will acquire a set of skills for managing low arousal, low level disruptive and repetitive behaviours of concern through to more confrontational behaviour in which staff may have to protect themselves from a potential physical assault.

Participants will gain an understanding of the underlying causes of behaviours of concern, what steps can be taken to reduce the likelihood of such behaviours occurring in the first instance, and learn basic strategies known to be effective in de-escalating and defusing behaviours of concern when they do occur.

On the one day course staff will gain an awareness of the effective use of space, proximity and touch in supporting service users whose behaviour may be escalating. On 2 Day courses, participants will also have the opportunity to learn a range of breakaway (disengagement & self-protection) techniques.

Topics include:

  • Values and ethics
