What RRN Certification Means

The Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards set the benchmark for safe, ethical, and effective practice. They:

  • Protect people’s fundamental human rights and promote person-centred, therapeutic approaches when people are distressed
  • Improve the quality of life for both those receiving support and the staff supporting them
  • Reduce reliance on restrictive practices by building a positive culture of prevention, de-escalation, and reflective practice
  • Increase understanding of the root causes of behaviour, recognising that many behaviours stem from distress and unmet needs
  • Where restrictive interventions are required, ensure they are used in the safest and most dignified way possible, with physical restraint as a last resort
  • Guarantee training is evidence-based, independently risk assessed, and delivered by skilled professionals

Who Are the Standards For?

The RRN Training Standards apply to any service that:

  • Receives NHS funding, or
  • Is inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and
  • Has employees who require training in Restrictive Physical Intervention (RPI) or Clinical Holding.

While the Standards are mandatory in these contexts, many organisations outside of these categories also choose RRN-certified training to demonstrate best practice, safeguard dignity, and prepare for future regulatory changes.

Helping You Achieve Compliance

We work in partnership with organisations to map out a clear journey towards full compliance. This includes:

  • Training Needs Analysis to ensure courses meet your specific context
  • Course Delivery Plans aligned with the RRN Standards
  • Annual refreshers for courses with a physical component
  • Quality assurance frameworks to monitor and review outcomes

Whether or not your service is classified as mandatory, we’ll guide you through the options. Many organisations outside mandatory sectors (such as education and children’s services) still choose RRN-certified training to ensure best practice and prepare for future regulation.

Affiliate & Associate Trainers

If you choose to develop in-house trainers, we’ll work with you as an Affiliate Organisation. Your Associate Trainers will be equipped to deliver our certified training to the highest standards, with access to resources, guidance, and ongoing support from PRICE Training.

FAQs

When did PRICE Training become certified?
We were certified by BILD ACT as complying with the RRN Training Standards in April 2020. See PRICE Training listed here.
Is my organisation classed as mandatory?
Yes, if you are covered by the Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Act 2018, receive NHS England funding for mental health or learning disability services, or are inspected by the CQC and require staff to be trained in restrictive practices.
What does being a mandatory service mean?
Since April 2021, the CQC has expected all health and social care services to only use training certified as meeting the RRN Standards. Failure to do so may be considered a breach of Regulation 18 on staff training. For these services, training must meet specific delivery requirements set out in the RRN Training Standards (including a minimum number of theory hours and strict trainer-to-delegate ratios) to ensure safety, quality, and consistency.
What if my service isn’t mandatory?
Even if your service isn’t deemed mandatory, many organisations choose RRN-certified training to demonstrate best practice, improve safety and dignity, and prepare for future regulation.
What is BILD ACT’s role?
BILD ACT is licensed by the RRN to certify training providers and ensure compliance through regular review and observation.
How do I access RRN-certified training from PRICE?
Our Positive Approaches to Challenging Behaviour (PACB©) curriculum is RRN/ Bild ACT-approved. At booking, we’ll confirm whether your service is classed as mandatory. If it is, we’ll explain how this impacts delivery, for example, minimum theory hours and required trainer-to-delegate ratios. If not, we’ll discuss whether you’d still like a course delivered in line with the Standards.
