Self-care is not self-ish

As we move into the holiday season, we want to pause and recognise the people we work alongside and the people they support.

Those in the caring professions draw on extraordinary everyday strength. They show up, day after day, to offer safe and respectful support to people who may be going through some of their most vulnerable moments. Yet these same strengths can come at a cost. When you give so much of yourself, it can be hard to leave enough time or energy for your own wellbeing.

Many people tell us they finally reach their leave and then spend it unwell, using the break to recover rather than restore, and resting rather than reconnecting.

At PRICE Training, we believe that looking after ourselves is not an optional extra. Self-care is not selfish. It is what allows us to thrive in our roles rather than simply push through them. The familiar oxygen mask analogy on flights still holds true: support yourself first so you can support others well.

Self-care is a personal journey. No manager can do it for us, but we can make deliberate choices and create small moments that help us stay well.

Some ideas

Set boundaries
Boundaries help us stay steady. They are not rigid lines that never move, but healthy practices we return to. Just as we offer structure and clarity to the people we support, we need some for ourselves too.

Establish good habits
Our brains love habits. The key is choosing habits that lift us rather than drain us. Think about what helps you return to your baseline or feel energised. It might be music, journalling, short walks, connecting with a colleague or looking at photos that remind you of good times. Gentle reminders can help until these habits become natural.

Practise self-compassion
Many of us are far kinder to others than we are to ourselves. Noticing what has gone well and the part you played in it can make a real difference. A short daily reflection can help you hold both the challenges and the wins in balance.

Final thoughts

To everyone who keeps showing up for those who need you, thank you.
If you have some leave this holiday period, we hope you enjoy time with loved ones and take a moment to notice all you have achieved in 2025.

For those supporting others over the holidays, thank you for being the extended family for the people in your care. We hope you find moments of connection, gratitude and calm.

We look forward to continuing the journey with all our current and future partners in 2026.
